Nem Nuong Khanh Hoa – Alhambra

When Plan A doesn’t work, you move to Plan B. 

Plan B for my friend, Mich, and me was to eat at Nem Nuong Khanh Hoa in Alhambra, which was not a shabby plan at all. I’ve eaten here many times, but this was Mich’s first visit. I didn’t want to be responsible for just an “okay dinner,” so my fingers were crossed that she would like the food as much as I do. Like always, Nem Nuong Khanh Hoa did not disappoint.

We shared the rice cakes, egg rolls, and deconstructed spring rolls: just exactly what Mich was looking for. Although she was new to this place, she was more than familiar with the food we were eating. “These are some of my favorite things to eat,” she stated. Thanks to her expertise in spring roll-making, I learned how to wrap it properly. I would have left my rice paper in warm water to deteriorate if she didn’t tell me otherwise.  

This dinner was composed of the perfect variety of flavors – acidic, savory, salty, crunchy, and fresh. The young coconut drink was the perfect ending to this delectable meal.

Left: Banh Beo Chen Tom Chay – Rice cake topped w/ crushed dried shrimp in small plates Middle: Nem Nuong (charbroiled meatball) & Cha Ram Tom (shrimp rolls that looks like thin eggrolls); served with a bed of romaine lettuce, basil, mint, cucumbers, bean sprouts, + a side of fish sauce. Oh and a young coconut drink.
