You see these cookie-topped bread here? Its called Conchas. It’s hard to live a life without it when you’re raised in East LA.
Conchas were served for breakfast in all the LAUSD schools I’ve attended (elementary through high school). I would eagerly wait in the single file line to exchange my lunch ticket for this sweet bread. I loved the way the cookie-top crumbled and melted in my mouth; I would relish every crumb of it. I still do, actually. Even when my LAUSD days are over, there I am – eagerly standing in line at a King Taco bakery to pay for my childhood pastry. I usually can’t decide which flavors to pick, so it would make sense to pick all. Right?
