RECIPE: Peppery Steak/Potatoes/Green Beans

Posted by

Hi Everyone!

I created a new goal. I’m adding a new segment to my blog that includes simple recipes on a budget. I would like to encourage those (on a budget) to cook often and to believe in themselves in the kitchen. Many people resort to fast foods because they haven’t given themselves a chance in the kitchen. Many people have told me that they eat out so much because they only know how to make cup of noodles and peanut butter sandwiches. I want to turn their thoughts around and remind them that THEY CAN COOK with just a little bit of effort ☺.

So without further ado, below is a steak and two sides meal that costed under $20. It was enough to feed my boyfriend and I. + THERE WERE LEFTOVERS!  🙂 and it was so easy to make!

This is actually my very first post on my home-cooking *GASP*! Dum Dum Dum! Yes, I’ll still be out and about eating and writing about L.A food. But hey, I don’t just eat restaurant food, I cook food too (shocking! I know!).

For someone who spends a lot of money eating outside food, I constantly wonder what I could have used that money on at a grocery store. I would think to myself: “I could have used that $27 dollars to make a good meal with leftovers for the week,” or “I can’t believe I just spent that much on one meal.” So it’s time to put these thoughts to rest. At least for 5 days out of the week.

This means I am cooking again. I have to. I’ve moved out from my mom’s and money must be thoughtfully spent. Which is great because it puts me back in tune with cooking and experimenting with flavors.

Extra Lean Beef Flank Steak:

I marinated this steak in a large ziplock bag for over a day; using the following seasonings/ingredients:

  • Garlic
  • Shallots
  • Salt
  • Pepper Medley -Black,White, Green, & Pink Peppercorn

How I cooked it:

  • Meddium pan over medium heat
  • Once pan is hot, place steak in it
  • 4 minutes on the first side
  • 2 minutes on the second side

AH! Don’t criticize me, but I just prefer medium well when it comes to my steak!

Purple/Red Mini Potatoes:

I thinly sliced my potatoes and placed it on a baking sheet.

Seasonings/Ingredients I used:

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Shredded Mexican Cheese

How I cooked it:

  • Preheat oven to 350° (I usually place potatoes in oven while it is heating up)
  • Bake for 15 minutes and take out
  • Douse potatoes with shredded Mexican Cheese
  • Put back in oven for additional 5 minutes
  • Turn off oven and ready to eat! 😛

Green Beans:

As you can see, I sprinkled some red hot pepper flakes on my potatoes. I always need that extra kick!

What do you guys think about my dish? Any pointers or tips you can give me? I am no expert and will be happy to learn.

What do you use to season your steak? Let me know! It’ll be instructive to hear from others :).

Also, follow me on Instagram , Yelp, and on Facebook to stay current on my whereabouts!

Sincerely,

Cecilia, @thestaticfoodbin

  1. Love this Cecilia!! We like to eat out too– but you’re right, cooking at home is more economical– and I’m all for leftovers too! This looks like an amazing meal–well seasoned and fresh. thanks– And– I read you description “Yelp Elite”– my daughter works at Yelp in San Francisco– so we are big fans too. OK, hope all’s well with you… xox

  2. I like your idea to blog some home cooking! We live 1 hour and 45 out of the city and often spend money making ourselves a good home cooked meal rather than driving to town. A treat is a nice cut of steak with grainy mustard and cornichons and of course crispy potatoes!
