Chichi Dango in Smorgasburg, L.A

I’m a huge fan of Shrimp Daddy (in fact, I was fortunate enough to be their first customer), so when the owners opened a new dessert stand, Chichi Dango, I gravitated to it like how Pepé Le Pew did to Penelope Pussycat.

Yep, The Fantastic Four – Jeremy, Anna, Dan, and June did it again. They continued their dedication to provide items that illuminates flavors of Hawai’i. They even traveled to Hawai’i for business development and research; making sure that their products reflects the taste of the island.

Chichi Dango at Smorgasburg, LA (Every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. –  4:00 p.m.)

Their Chichi Dango stand offers Hawaiian shaved ice, an island favorite, and it is the perfect ending to their garlic butter shrimp. Their shaved ice domes are capped with fresh fruit purees, popping bobas, condensed milk, fruit pieces, and homemade chichi dango (AKA mochi). If you think all that sounds amazing, you will be happy to know that there is Straus’s organic soft serve buried under all that goodness.

Above: Chichi Dango AKA “mochi” originated in Japan, but is popular in Hawai’i. It is a baked sweet rice flour dessert that comes in an assortment of flavors.

Chichi Dango has two items on their menu – Strawberry Passion Fruit and Pineapple Coco Cream. The three mochi flavors are milk, matcha, and strawberry. The matcha mochi is made with premium matcha that is imported from Japan and the strawberry mochi is made with real strawberries! These batches of mochi are baked the night before; guaranteeing its freshness and deliciousness. Everything on the shaved ice is made with top quality ingredients from head to toe. Most of the details are done by hand labor- from baking and cutting the mochi individually; slicing fruit pieces; and making fresh fruit puree. Additionally, the colors and flavors of Chichi Dango’s Hawaiian shaved ice are all made with natural ingredients. Thus, no artificial coloring is used.

I decided to try the Strawberry Passion Fruit shaved ice since it is June’s favorite and it happens to be Chichi Dango’s most popular item.  I must say it was satisfying since it brought me back to my fondest memories of enjoying a globe of shaved ice at the Kailua Village in Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i. To me, any food that makes me feel nostalgic and happy is a winner.

The Fantastic Four takes great pride in what they offer as they are devoted in providing excellence and authenticity in their product. If you are interested in chillin’ and eating Hawaiian style, be sure to visit Shrimp Daddy and Chichi Dango at Smorgasburg, LA every Sunday between 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. If you can’t visit Hawai’i, then the the Fantastic Four can bring Hawai’i to you.
